Labeled “brandy,” not “cognac,”? indicating that it is French brandy produced outside of the Cognac region, Darvelle Freres is nonetheless produced under the auspices of the venerable Cognac house of Prunier. The first member of the Prunier family involved in the trade was Jean Prunier, a renowned Cognac expert, who began shipping his wines and Cognacs across the world around 1700. Fast-forward to the twentieth century when Alphonse Prunier died in 1918 leaving no heirs; Alphonse’s widow called upon her nephew Jean Burnez to take over the business and it has remained with that branch of the family ever since. Darvelle Freres is a great value-for-money sipper, with rich caramel aromas and flavors alongside lots of spice and a mouthwatering saline tang on the finish.
