Papa’s Pilar Blonde Rum 7 Solera is the first “Blonde” rum from the brand, inspired by the lighter rums Ernest Hemingway enjoyed in Key West and Cuba in the 1930s. It is crafted from a selection of rums spanning the Caribbean and Central, South, and North America, solera blended in American Oak Bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks. It is bottled at 42% ABV (84 proof).
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Rounded with bright citrus notes (grapefruit, mandarin, key lime), almond, fresh apricot, and fine butterscotch. Some detect vanilla and oak.
- Palate: Creamy mouthfeel with a buttery vanilla taste. Layers of soft mango, orange peel, and hints of pineapple. Nutty and exceptionally smooth. Some find notes of ripe banana and honeyed molasses.
- Finish: Described as earthy with lingering vanilla notes.
Awards and Recognition:
- Best in Class White Rum at the 2013 Rum Renaissance Festival.
- It has won several international awards for its quality and taste.
Overall Impression: Papa’s Pilar Blonde Rum 7 Solera is generally viewed as a unique and flavorful “Blonde” rum that stands out from traditional white rums due to its solera aging and cask finishing. It offers a smooth and creamy texture with a profile that balances bright citrus and tropical fruit notes with hints of almond and butterscotch. While some reviews note a touch of sweetness, it’s generally considered well-balanced and enjoyable for sipping or using in premium cocktails like a Hemingway Daiquiri. Its complex flavor profile, resulting from the blend of aged rums and cask influence, makes it a more interesting option compared to many standard white rums.
